ILike many pets who travel far before finding their forever homes, so did we.

Meet our team, who will build lasting relationships with your pets.

We believe in a gentler world, that includes how we treat pets and all animals.

Marty-pants

CEO: Canine Executive Officer
MARTY

Hometown: Born in St. Maarten, Caribbean. Pasadena is home now.

Puppyhood dream: Living it.

What I value most: Chillin’.

What inspires me: Digging up filthy bones ‘n things that I didn’t bury. Seeing my people clearly delighted when they discover I’ve reburied them under their pillow.

In college: I peed against the trees.

Most interesting place visited:  Middle of the asphalt street on a hot summer day.

Favorite place to go to in Pasadena: Where the good people are.

Leanne adds: Marty-pants, tell us all what to do next, you brilliant wise oracle.

PS – Since accepting my role at The Long Leash, many people have asked what I, a mere canine, could possibly do all day to help. There has been a scandalous suggestion that since I walk on four rather than two, I couldn’t possibly contribute in any useful way. I asked my person if I could respond to these allegations.

My day begins with a long commute from bedroom floor to kitchen. When I arrive, the first thing I do is check to see where people are at. I say hello to everything as I poke my head around. Everyone always smiles when they see me. Sometimes I eat before the inside cat, Chloe. But mostly not.

After saying hello to everyone, I like to make sure the office is ready for the day’s duties.  I check and freshen the carpets by sniffing, rolling, and generally making sure they have my wisdomness everywhere. If there are bits of breakfast that have fallen on the floor and need picking up, I’ll help.

Then it’s out to the front porch. My person leaves in a car with my picture on it, although on it, I am adorned with a rainbow sweater. I’m down.  There’s a really nice spot right outside our front door where I can lay and keep track of everyone else who drives by all day, until my person gets home later.  I like to think about my people periodically throughout the day. Sometimes, I stop to look at the outside cat named Rory who has yet to acknowledge me, though I even brushed against him once.

Sometime late in the day, my person gets home. I let her open the door for me. So, you see, there’s a lot for a dog to do at The Long Leash. I play a pivotal part in morale, and put everyone at ease.

LEANNE

Hometown: Then, Toronto, Canada.  Now, Pasadena.

Childhood dream: To live as a forest fairy among woodland creatures.

What I value most: Authenticity.

What inspires me: The wisdom and honesty of nature. The strength of animals. Community.

In college: Pre-college, my family owned a boarding kennel, where my love of dogs and cats grew exponentially. In college, I studied social work and gender studies, while volunteering in the animal welfare field. After working in violence intervention services, I circled back to working at veterinary hospitals, recognizing how centered I was working alongside animals each day. Animals, quite simply, ground me.

Most interesting place visited: In our 20’s, Scott and I abandoned life as we knew it, and cycled Europe, tenting in new hideaways nightly. Fleeting towns. Field cats. Fierce perseverance cycling up mountains. Transformation took place while cycling across countryside by day, sleeping in farmyards under the stars by night. Nothing but ourselves and nature. We had everything we needed.

Favorite place to go to in Pasadena: Lula Mae. The mountains. Because they’re calling. And I must go.

Animals are the finest part of this planet.
All of them: wild, winged, finned, large, tiny, fierce, gentle
and those that share our homes, hearts and lives.

My early childhood was shaped by the wonders of the surrounding wildlife.
Still dear to my heart, I volunteer at California Wildlife Center, transporting injured wildlife.

Animals have the mighty mission of expanding our hearts
and always surprise me with their unique ways of expressing themselves
and evoking tenderness.

Working with animals is superlative,
being greeted with full body happiness is contagious
or timid, hard earned trust
both are wholeheartedly fulfilling.

I am currently in a Registered Vet Tech program,
happily sharing my life with two Lab mixes, Otter, Augustine
and a Golden Retriever, Oliver.

in my former life, I was a photographer
with a BFA from Otis College of Art + Design

Leanne adds:  She’s practically a dog. In this life, or the former. The pets know it.

The Long Leash - our team - Kali

KALI   (“Kay-lee”)

Hometown: Pasadena, California is the only place I have ever called home. But I have had the privilege of living in such wonderful cities as Chicago, San Francisco, Monrovia and Thousand Oaks.

Childhood Dream: Literature has always been a major part of my early memory and I always thought I would grow up to be a writer/ novelist. I always took photos for fun to document the stories I wanted to tell. I never imagined that one day I would get paid to do something I love.

What I Value Most: Family. Whether you believe you have the best or the worst family, it is family that shapes ones past and future. I have been graced with a dysfunctionally supportive family that I would not trade for all the valuables in the world.

In College: I went to college because it was expected and I came out with the knowledge and understanding that what you learn is not as important as developing the skill to try, fail, try, succeed, rinse, wash and repeat in as many iterations as there are galaxies in the universe.

Most Interesting Place I have Visited:
Any place where I have left with a story to share, in other words every place I have ever been is the most interesting place I have visited. I have a true memory from each place that cannot be compared or weighed against any other memory of other places. For example, the first time I visited Utah I saw a guy walk through a plate glass window. The majesty of the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Old Faithful, Mt. Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, Pike’s Peak, June Lake are all unique.

Favorite Place to go in Pasadena: Any and every Library in Pasadena.

Leanne adds: Kali is integrity at its finest. While lighthearted with a great sense of humor, Kali brings a refreshing professionalism to her time spent with our pets, as she holds herself to a high standard of care and commitment.

 SUSAN

Hometown: Mayfield, Kentucky. Now, Pasadena is my home.

Childhood dream: To own a horse farm in the Western U.S.

What I admire: Creativity, intelligence, courage.

What I value most: Fairness and kindness.

Hobbies: Reading. Going to the gym. I am what my husband calls a ‘stable pony’. I love just to be home with a good book or four.

In college: I attended Freed Hardeman University in Tennessee. I worked as a commercial lines insurance agent for 17 years retiring when I gave birth to my son Ulee almost 13 years ago.

Leanne adds: I suspect Susan jumps out of bed on two feet, ready to begin running that moment, with leash in hand! While her love of this work is evident, she has a unique ability to adjust her energy to meet dogs where they are at in a particular moment. Her ability to adapt to particular pets’ special needs is remarkable.

Lucie

LUCIE

Hometown: Pasadena via San Francisco
Childhood dream: books, books and more books.
In a nutshell: Dogs. Coffee. Fitness. Books. Bad Jokes. Exploring.

My World: When I’m not in the high school classroom helping teens discover their voices, I’m with my best furry sidekicks- Queen Annie and Sir Beauregard of Brigden aka Bowie. This “royal” pair brings an overwhelming sense of happiness and love into my world. You feel the love the minute you meet them. Our pack has a lot of fun together.

Fave place: Anywhere I can bring my dogs that has good coffee. Internationally, Cape Town tops the list. Locally- San Francisco has my heart.
Leanne adds: Lucie!!
